BLACK SEA - s/t 10"/CDEP

After Frodus broke up in December 1999, Jason Hamacher and Shelby Cinca began exploring different interests both musical and non-musical. Hamacher began world travel and Cinca started work on various visual and sound projects. After several months apart, they reunited under an unnamed project. They soon joined up with longtime Fugazi acquaintance Joe Lally, and the three practiced briefly before Hamacher set off on a three-month trip throughout Europe and Asia. Lally and Cinca wrote and recorded their musical concepts and sent them via email to Hamacher, who would listen to the MP3s and respond. The Black Sea, once a project, was now a band.

THE CASSETTES - s/t LP

The Cassettes' self-titled album is at its core a pop album. Not that it relies on the ol' 1-4-5 formula at all. On this release, the quartet comprising former and current members of Frodus, Dead Meadow, and Weird War has surrounded its irresistible center with lush, layered vocals and slight elements of garage rock and psychedelia. The Cassettes steer away from former projects to shape raw, catchy gems guaranteed to stick in your head for a long time to come. Rock 'n' roll bite and electricity charge each attention-grabbing song on the album, and every track brims with relentless energy. This first full-length album by The Cassettes succinctly captures the sound of positive, unfettered youth. Refreshingly free of anything remotely melancholy, they rely on a thick sound of twin guitars anchored by an ambling bass line and driven beats. The Cassettes burst and crackle with animated abandon, alighting their album with one blistering track after another; it's uncommon and remarkable to witness a group come out of the gates with such unrestrained vigor.

ENGINE DOWN - Demure LP/CD

After growing steadily behind two critically embraced and well received albums, Engine Down present Demure, a full length that may surprise their most ardent fans yet remains inviting to those unfamiliar with their previous records. Demure captures an intriguing level of introspection only hinted at in previous work, and the underlying patter throughout the album is efficiency. They dare the listener to discover the complexities within this record avoiding many of the expected guides of dynamic contrast or bombastic yells typically used to convey earnestness or passion.

BATS & MICE - Believe It Mammals LP/CD

The debut full length from Bats & Mice is an ambitious work that eagerly explores a multiplicity of dynamics, moods, rhythms, and timbres. For those keeping score, B feature ex-members of Four Hundred Years, Sleepytime Trio, Rah Brahs, and Milemarker. Because three members share vocals, this record amply features a wide spectrum of deliveries and harmonies. Twelve beautiful melancholic ballads similar to Black Heart Procession, late June Of 44 and Ida. These guys cant deny their past, so there is a decent rock background compare to above mentioned, relaxed bands.
